{Volvo Ocean Race} Racing Toward Sustainability

Every big event leaves an environmental footprint. In sailboat racing, vessels are built, a huge logistical operation is set in motion and RIBs log hours of water time. In addition, race villages at each port produce a lot of waste. A recently-implemented program is designed to minimize the Volvo Ocean Races impact. A prime target is the reduction or even the elimination of single-use plastic bottles.

“Secondly, we are using our global communications platform to change other people’s views and other people’s behavior,” explained CEO Mark Turner. “And, thirdly, our goal is to leave a legacy. We go to 12 host cities and are able to impact, influence, change views, and get new commitments.”

One design boats are used for several races, reducing their effect on the environment. Several of the teams in this year’s Volvo have committed to the cause right from the start. Both 11th Hour Racing and Turn the Tide on Plastic are working toward ocean sustainability while racing around the world.
