Rolls-Royce has a vision: Unmanned cargo ships that sail around the world and are remotely controlled from the virtual bridge of the future. Equipped with interactive smart screens, voice recognition systems, GPS information, holograms and surveillance drones, a small team shall be able to monitor marine traffic around the world.
The video of this vision already creates a science-fiction atmosphere – but that could soon become reality according to the plans of the marine business part of the British company. The remote operations center belongs to its plan to develop autonomous and remote controlled vessels.
The research was undertaken by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Unit for Computer Human Interaction University at the University of Tampere in collaboration with Rolls-Royce.
